Curtis is the daughter Carmencita Ojales, a Filipina born in Bolinao Pangasinan, and James Ernest Curtis Smith who is an Australian attorney. Her birthplace was Yarrawonga within Victoria, Australia. Her father had been engaged to Ojales before 1982. Jasmine, her younger sister is an actress as well. Clare passed away from a heart condition in 2007, she was only four months old.
